• W3021777390 abstract "Abstract Worksite health promotion programs first appeared in industry during the 1970s. Interest in these programs has grown exponentially since then. In the late 1970s and early 1980s less than 5% of employers had employee health promotion programs. The 1992 National Survey of Worksite Health Promotion Program Activities revealed that 81% of workplaces offered at least one health promotion initiative, compared to 66% at the time of the previous survey in 1985. The majority of the companies with health promotion programs stated that health care cost containment and improved worker health and safety were the primary goals of their health promotion programs. It is unclear how many of these programs attained their stated goals. Indeed, only 12% of the companies surveyed reported that they conducted a formal program evaluation. The purpose of this chapter is to present a broad overview of the concept and application of outcome‐based worksite health promotion. The theory behind worksite health promotion is reviewed, including the definitions of health and health promotion and the theoretical frameworks that attempt to explain how people decide whether or not to participate in these programs. Worksite health promotion is defined and several program‐planning models discussed. Following this review of the basics, there is a discussion of outcome analysis as a means to evaluate the effectiveness of worksite programs. Several examples of successful health promotion programs within industry are reviewed. The chapter concludes with an overview of the trends that will affect the delivery of health promotion services in the future and suggested approaches to address these challenges." @default.
