- W3021787013 abstract "Abstract Curcumin is a pleiotropic substance, that is, the molecule is capable of interacting with multiple targets involved in the inflammatory reaction such as tumors, necrosis factor α, and interleukins. Curcuminoids are agents of natural origin with a variety of applications described as anticancer, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial. In nature curcumin is a naturally hydrophobic molecule, therefore, its bioavailability is impaired, limiting its use in therapeutics. Its chemical constitution is based on two polyphenolic rings that are replaced by methoxy ether in ortho, and its tautomerization changes the relative concentrations of the cis–trans forms, which vary according to temperature, the polarity of solvent, and pH. The metabolic process of curcumin and related compounds is determinant of its biological effects against a large variety of tissue pathologies. Curcumin controls imbalance between free radicals and the immunological system against oxidative stress, being antioxidant compound. Curcumin can reduce reactive oxygen species production, remove free radicals, and increase antioxidant enzymes." @default.
