- W3021796213 abstract "Advancements in our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of algae come from carefully designed experimental growth either in batch cultures or in continuous cultures. The use of chemostats, an apparatus that allows the continuous production of algal cells under defined nutrient, light, temperature, and growth rate conditions, offers a critical opportunity in algal biotechnology. Depending upon the chosen physiological conditions, the products of the algal culture can be optimized under continuous-culture conditions. Although chemostats have long been used in ecological studies, and there remains a continued need to follow this research area, only recently have chemostats been considered in algal biotechnology applications. Research areas, such as bioremediation, ecotoxicity, and the production of unique metabolites (food additives, medicinal toxins, and value-added protein) under defined growth and environmental conditions, will all benefit, either at the preliminary, experimental design stage or in the development of large-scale, photo-bioreactor studies, by using the principles of continuous culture." @default.
