- W3021904132 abstract "Working memory dysfunction is often described in normal aging and in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However the nature of this deficit is controversial. To verify the impact of normal and pathological aging (AD) on working memory and to characterize the functioning of the Central Executive and the Phonological Loop (working memory subcomponents according to Baddeley and Hitch's model of 1974) in these groups. The study included 67 subjects, 23 healthy young adults (Group 1); 24 healthy aged subjects (Group 2) and 20 patients with mild AD (Group 3). The three groups were matched for gender and educational level. Additionally, there were no significant differences between Groups 2 and 3 with regard to age. All participants were submitted to working memory tests. We have performed intragroup and intergroup analysis. We have found significant differences between Groups 1 and 2 and between Groups 2 and 3 in working memory tasks. Groups 1 and 2 were sensitive to word similarity and word extension and had proportional decline to manipulate information and to perform simultaneous tasks. Group 3 was sensitive to word similarity but not to word extension and had a significantly greater decline than the other groupsto manipulate information and to accomplish two tasks simultaneously. There is a decline of working memory in normal aging and in mild AD. In normal aging the deficits are mild and point to central executive dysfunction. In AD the decline is more severe and characterized by phonological loop (rehearsal procedure) and central executive dysfunction." @default.
