- W3021968711 abstract "It is possible for forensic anthropologists to differentiate between male and female skeletons because humans are sexually dimorphic, that is, due to their sex, they differ in size and shape. Sex differences in the skeleton are related primarily to the functions of parturition and locomotion. Females must have a wide pelvis and birth canal due to the large size of human infant heads, while maintaining efficient locomotion. The pelvis is the most sexually dimorphic region of the human skeleton, thus visual assessment of the pelvis is the most accurate method for estimating sex. Metric assessment of postcranial limb bones (based on the fact that males are larger on average than females, especially in weight-bearing joints) is the second most reliable method for sex estimation. Sex differences in the skull are less reliable than those of the pelvis and limb bones but still have utility in sex estimation. Sex can also sometimes be determined from skeletal remains using DNA." @default.
