- W3021994694 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses stage scenery. The stage setting assists the visual expression of the dramatic performance by providing a geography for the actor within the stage space, assisting the action, contributing to the atmosphere of the play, and clarifying the time and place of the scene. It also serves to screen other visual distractions from the audience. The stage setting is made up of scenery, properties, and costume. There are three kinds of properties: hand properties, purely decorative properties, and stage properties or props. The stage setting is more than mere decoration or illustration; it is an integral part of a production. It should both present a visual stimulus to the imagination and emphasize the mood of the play. In most theaters, the form of stage is fixed and can be modified only within very narrow limits, so that the settings have to be tailored to the stage. Another factor that will affect the scenery is the amount of stage machinery available. It may be either part of the permanent equipment or installed for the particular production. It can have two functions: (1) suspending and changing scenery and (2) creating illusions and special effects. The construction and repair of scenery requires plenty of space within easy reach of the stage, good working conditions with supplies of gas, water and electricity, and the right conditions for storing timber. All storage should be easily accessible from backstage without going through the auditorium." @default.
