- W3022029772 abstract "For most animals, predation is a daily risk, and behavior is an important tool with which they mitigate that risk. Behavior plays a key role in the success of camouflage or crypsis. Inappropriate activity unmasks the best disguise, and behavioral strategies such as background matching require careful choice of resting place. Mimicry involves hiding in plain view; the mimic convinces the observer that the mimic is something completely different. Startle behavior distracts or frightens the predator. Aposematism is the use of conspicuous colors, together with bad taste or other unpleasant experience, to teach avoidance to predators. Animals may mimic other dangerous animals and they may even play dead in order to escape predation. If none of these strategies succeed, an animal employs evasive behavior, and if cornered or captured, may fight the predator using chemicals and body armor as well as teeth and claws. Parasites and pathogens also induce defensive behavior, including sickness behavior, behavioral fever, and a shift in foraging to self-medication." @default.
