- W3022519911 abstract "Publisher SummaryBluetongue (BT) is an insect-borne disease of ruminants caused by BT virus (BTV). Infection is not contagious between its mammalian hosts and is not transmitted transovarially (from mother to offspring) by its Culicoides vectors. Accordingly, viral transmission is restricted to events of Culicoides feeding on hosts, with virus passing either from an infected vector to a susceptible host, or from an infected host to a susceptible vector. One of the most significant concepts in epidemiology is that of R0, the basic case reproduction ratio. This is a measure of the number of new infections that arise, on average, from the introduction of one infected case into a susceptible population. The central importance of transmission rates to the epidemiology of Culicoides-borne disease is underlined by simulation modeling, of AHS epidemic likelihood, following viral introduction into a susceptible host population. There are significant associations between the highest titre of BTV in any one engorged midge and the subsequent pattern of viraemia in the host. A logical deduction is that midges of higher BTV titre must inoculate more virus upon feeding than midges of lower BTV titre. This deduction, if valid, would be novel, as most previous workers have assumed that any midge with a fully disseminated infection is equally likely to infect a host upon feeding." @default.
