- W3022715046 abstract "Chordoma is a rare, malignant neoplasm that is thought to arise from notochordal rests in the sacrum or the clivus. The tissue consists of physaliferous cells lying in a myxoid or mucinous, metachromatically staining matrix. This chapter discusses a biochemical study to describe the non-collagenous matrix of a chordoma of the clivus and of a subsequent cervical lymph node metastasis. Both tissues had similar high water content (95%). However, the metastasis had lower glycosaminoglycan content, a higher molar ratio of galactosamine to glucosamine, and a lower molar ratio of hexosamine to uronic acid than the primary tumor. The results from the study indicate the presence of all the carbohydrate constituents of a normal proteoglycan complex in both chordoma and a metastasis. A number of speculative explanations are permissible: (1) the immature pattern of glycosaminoglycans might be associated with a more rapid growth of the tumor, (2) the tumor cells might have responded to altered environmental conditions by shifting the emphasis of glycosaminoglycan synthesis, and (3) the metastasized cells might have rapidly synthesized a new matrix either as a protection against immune recognition or to create a suitable micro-environment for continued growth and survival." @default.
