- W3022752562 abstract "Publisher SummaryVibrio cholerae is the aetiological agent of epidemic cholera, which in its most severe manifestation causes profuse, watery diarrhoea that can result in rapid dehydration and death. V. cholcrae is also a member of the estuarine environment and, along with cholera, may be associated with occasional extra-intestinal for mild diarrhoeal illnesses. This chapter discusses infections due to V. cholerae, although they are of primal, importance in developing countries where epidemic cholera remains a serious health threat. Although public-health reforms have lead to a near-eradication of cholera in industrialized nations, the disease remains endemic in many developing countries. Additionally, outbreaks of cholera have escalated in the past several years, as dramatically demonstrated by the re-emergence of epidemic cholera. Many facets of the pathogenesis of V. cholerae are still poorly understood. Ongoing and future research on this organism can provide insights on pathogenicity and provides a basis for the development of new vaccines." @default.
