- W3022796728 abstract "This chapter focuses on theories for calculating the thermodynamic and structural properties of non-uniform fluids. It shows how useful approximations can be devised and describes their application to a variety of physical problems. It first describes liquids at interfaces. Molecular interactions at fluid interfaces are responsible for many familiar, physical processes, from lubrication and bubble formation to the wetting of solids and the capillary rise of liquids in narrow tubes. The equilibrium values that are arrived at based on the competition between bulk and surface effects are discussed. Approximate free- energy functionals are detailed in the next section. Small-amplitude modulation and slow-modulation limit are also discussed. The liquid–vapor interface is described. The fundamental measure theory is detailed. Confined fluids are considered next, describing some of the results obtained from calculations for fluids in confined geometries. The chapter then concludes with information on the density-functional theory of freezing. One of the most significant findings to emerge from the earliest molecular simulations was that the hard-sphere fluid freezes into a stable, face-centered cubic crystal. This section attempts to obtain a rough estimate of the configurational entropy in the two phases by temporarily ignoring the correlations between particles brought about by excluded-volume effects." @default.
