- W3023075951 abstract "This chapter explores education system in Yugoslavia. The pre-war system of education in Yugoslavia was of the traditional highly selective type already remarked on in other countries. Basic schooling was compulsory for four years and was provided in the national school. This could be followed by the higher national school, a four-year terminal elementary course, or by secondary education. This was of three main types: (1) the general secondary school with an eight-year course, (2) the civic school, designated by the law of 1931 as an incomplete secondary school, and comparable with the similarly-named schools in pre-war Czechoslovakia; and 3) technical and vocational schools of various types. Generalization is more difficult in the case of Yugoslavia than any other Eastern European country, owing to the federal structure of the country and the considerable regional variations. There are also variations within the republics and even within smaller units and many gaps between enactment and implementation in policy and organization." @default.
