- W3023138712 abstract "The existence of a large dopaminergic pool of neurons in the striatum has allowed the chemical, functional, and pharmacologic characteristics of the similarities between dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons to be explored in detail in this chapter. In the sympathetic nervous system, there is evidence for dopaminergic neural influences on a variety of visceral functions, particularly renal function, digestive tract motility, and vascular resistance. However, these dopaminergic neurons are admixed with larger populations of noradrenergic cells. It is therefore necessary to be able to accurately define the differences between the two types. The chapter focuses on the neurochemical features that distinguish dopaminergic from noradrenergic phenotypes. Both dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons synthesize their transmitters primarily from plasma tyrosine; thus, both contain tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and the levels and presence of this enzyme throughout the neuron are similar for both types. Because only noradrenergic cells convert dopamine (DA) to noradrenaline (NA), only these cells require dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH). In these cells, DBH is present throughout the length of the neuron at similar levels. However, antigenically active DBH is absent from dopaminergic cells." @default.
