- W3023151635 abstract "Publisher SummaryFungi decompose dead plants and animals and recycle essential minerals back into the soil for reuse by other growing plants. Fungi are important industrially in the production of antibiotics, cheeses, wines, and a large number of other products. Fungi are also the most commonly encountered group of plant pathogens. The species of fungi that can attack woody plants are the major concern for those working with the shade trees. This chapter discusses the methods of identification of fungi that cause tree diseases. The identification of fungi is a complex process that requires the microscopic examination and an extensive knowledge of the taxonomy of the fungi. It is the duty of the shade tree specialist to know when to submit the samples, what tree tissues are needed in the samples for the particular case, and how to collect and ship the samples of diseased plant materials to the plant disease diagnostician for identification. Trees respond to the attacks of fungi and other infectious pathogens by placing barriers in front of the invading microorganisms, thus attempting to limit the amount of infected tissue." @default.
