- W3023239963 abstract "Acinetobacters, first identified in 1911, are strictly aerobic, short and plump rod-shaped bacteria, often capsulated, non-motile and classified as Gram-negative, but often typified as being ‘Gram-variable’ when present in older cultures. Acinetobacters are ubiquitous, free-living saprophytes. They have been isolated from soil, seawater, freshwater, estuaries, sewage, contaminated food and mucosal and outer surfaces of animals and humans. Acinetobacters are increasingly being associated with nosocomial infections. These include septicaemia, urinary tract infections, eye infections, meningitis, skin and wound infections, brain abscesses, lung abscesses, pneumonia and endocarditis. Much research now focuses on the use of molecular fingerprinting techniques, including analysis of plasmid profiles, restriction endonuclease digestion and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of total chromosomal DNA, random amplified polymorphic DNA profiles, ribotyping, cell envelope and outer-membrane protein profiles or multilocus enzyme electrophoretic typing for the profiling of Acinetobacter. This chapter discusses Acinetobacter, including aspects of basic microbiology, natural history, metabolism and physiology, clinical features, pathogenicity and virulence, survival in the environment, survival in water, evidence for growth in a biofilm, methods of detection, antimicrobial control, and finally, risk assessment." @default.
