- W3023376088 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of glucagon. Glucagon is a polypeptide with a molecular weight of 3485. Diverse properties distinguish glucagon from insulin. The most important difference is that glucagon is resistant to alkalies and to reducing substances such as cysteine. Glucagon is unstable in acid pH, particularly in the presence of electrolytes. At a pH below 3, it has a tendency to form fibrils. The basic studies carried out by Sutherland and De Duve (1948) established that the α-cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas constitute the principal site of elaboration of glucagon. The most important glucagon bioassays are based on either the hyperglycemic effect of the test preparation or its glycogenolytic properties. The most widely used assay is that of Staub and Behrens in the cat. It requires four hyperglycemia slopes in four anesthetized cats, that is, 16 slopes in all, with five samples drawn for each slope." @default.
