- W3023420541 abstract "This chapter describes bud dormancy in plants, which is a period in which growth temporarily ceases and is a feature of the annual growth cycle of many plants. Such growth inactivity can be imposed directly by the environment (by low winter temperatures, for example) or, for the lateral buds, may be a consequence of apical dominance by the terminal bud. However, many woody plants also show a period of true dormancy when growth is not resumed under favorable environmental conditions, nor when the influence of other buds is removed. Various terms have been used to denote these different types of growth inactivity. Ecodormancy or quiescence are often used when growth inactivity is a direct consequence of environmental conditions, whereas ectodormancy refers to the situation when factors external to the dormant tissue, but within the plants, are the cause of the failure to grow. Endodormancy, or rest, is caused by factors within the dormant tissue. In many experiments, these different types of inactivity are not distinguished; consequently, dormancy is used here as a general term for the suspension of visible growth." @default.
