- W3023444726 abstract "The optic nerve is the second cranial nerve and is one of the more unusual cranial nerves as it develops from the diencephalon. It is a special sensory nerve responsible for vision. The information received from the external environment passes to the rods and cones on the retina, and then to bipolar cells, ganglion cells, and ultimately to the optic nerve. The nerve contains layers of meninges as it is viewed as a direct extension of the brain. Therefore, clinically an increase in intracranial pressure, for whatever reason, can be assessed using an ophthalmoscope. The optic nerve then passes through the optic canal, onward to the optic chiasma, and then to terminate in the occipital lobes. At the optic chiasma, some information crosses to the opposite side aiding binocular vision. A wide variety of tests can be performed to assess the function of the nerve." @default.
