- W3023482007 abstract "This chapter describes the importance of clinical neurological examination. In almost all children with a neurological disease, electroencephalography may be helpful in the further management of the child. The active cooperation of the patient is not necessary, and the examination can, therefore, be performed in children of any age, including those who are mentally retarded. The normal electroencephalogram (EEG) in the newborn infant is flat and slow with a frequency of 1–2 cycles per second. By about 3–4 months of age, the frequency has doubled and the amplitude increased by about three to four times. Toward the end of the first year, the frequency is about 3–5 cycles per second and the amplitude remains at about the same height and the rhythm becomes more regular. At 2–3 years of age, short periods of activity within the range of alpha activity start to appear, but most of the activity is still irregular with a frequency of 4–6 cycles per second. Alpha activity usually appears first and is most marked in the occipital leads. At 7–9 years of age, alpha activity is the dominating finding in a normal EEG, but the slower activity is not reduced to the same degree as in a normal adult EEG until 12–14 years of age." @default.
