- W3023484410 abstract "This chapter discusses the receptor characteristics and conduction velocities in bladder afferents. A classic problem in the neurophysiology of sensory systems has been the correlation of structure with function in peripheral nerves. The physiologic characterization of sensory receptors and the measurement of the fiber diameters and/or conduction velocities of these afferents form the basis for this approach. Conduction velocities have been determined for sensory fibers whose terminations respond to touch, hair displacement, muscle stretch, nociceptive stimuli, and temperature changes. The chapter discusses a study in which experiments were carried out in 24 adult cats under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia. Respiratory rate, EKG, blood pressure, and rectal temperature were monitored by standard transducers. The bladder was routinely exposed by a midline suprapubic incision and the uretha canulated at the bladder neck. Threshold differences were evident for the separate receptors. Each unit responded to the successive filling conditions with an increase in firing rate until a maximum rate was reached. Firing continued at that level in spite of an increase in developing pressure. This maximum firing rate and the pressure level at which it was reached was different for each unit." @default.
