- W3023533104 abstract "Patterns of communication are first summarized for each major group of amphibians and reptiles. Caecilians, salamanders, some turtles, and many squamates employ chemical cues, frogs and crocodylians employ acoustic cues, many squamate lizards and some frogs use visual cues, and many amphibians and reptiles use tactile cues. Often, more than one type of cue is involved. Social behavior requires communication and is usually associated with mating. The kind of mating system that occurs is usually a function of the parent’s influence on survival of offspring. The environment often plays some role in determining the kind of mating system that occurs as well. Most amphibians and reptiles are polygynous, but examples of monogamy and polyandry also exist. Alternative mating strategies allow matings by individuals that might not be high ranking in the social system. Competition among individuals within each sex and mate choice based on morphological and behavioral traits have resulted in sexual dimorphism, some of which is extreme." @default.
