- W3023646228 abstract "Phalaris minor Retz. (hereafter referred to as PM) has developed resistance to numerous herbicides. Therefore, herbicides cannot be a sole and fool-proof strategy for its control. Being grassy monocot plants, wheat, and PM pose similar competition for nutrients, particularly N, but have differential use of nitrogen (N). Manipulating N can be a possible management option. The aim of this experiment was to determine economic threshold (ET) and interference impacts of PM densities across N levels on wheat. The main plot treatments consisted of three levels of N (100, 150 and 180 kg N ha−1 = N100, N150 and N180, respectively), and the sub-plots had five densities of PM (0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 PM plants m−2). The 80 PM treatment resulted in 387.1–464.4% higher tillers number and 334.3–373.2% higher dry weights of PM than those observed in the 10 PM. The N180 significantly reduced PM tillers (~40.4%) at 80 PM, and increased wheat ear-bearing tillers by 9.6–13.8% and 34–38.7% than N150 and N100, respectively. The yield reduction due to the highest density of 80 p.m. was considerably lower (~14%) with N180 than with N150 (~18.4%) and N100 (~34%). Thus, the N180 provided considerable wheat-PM balance. The two-year mean ETs were 6, 8, and 10 PM m−2 at N100, N150 and N180, respectively. This would help to make decisions for PM management, reduce future PM/weed infestations, and rationalize herbicide use and intake into the environment through tailoring of doses." @default.
