- W3023744924 abstract "This chapter deals with the filterability of slurry. It outlines the nature of the slurry to be filtered, pretreatment of slurry, and slurry handling. It is dangerous to assume too much about the filterability of slurry. The filterability of a slurry can be improved by increasing the temperature of the slurry or not allowing it to cool, by increasing the density of the slurry, by increasing particle size (if possible or allowable), by using slurry additives, by using chemicals to modify pH or cause the particles to group together, and by bulking up the slurry with solid matter. These can be tested at small scale. The key question is how any improvements in the overall process framed in terms of cost, quality, safety, health and environment, and productivity compare to any additional costs. Changing the process upstream can deliver significant improvements and all processes could be “engineered for filtration,” or designed to produce a slurry that filters optimally. In some cases a product may have a critical quality parameter that is directly related to the filterability of the slurry. Slurry density can be increased by utilizing upstream thickening, using hydrocyclones, sedimenting centrifuges, or gravity thickening. It may also be improved using coagulants or flocculants. If a filtration plant is at the limit of its capacity then any one of these measures could be an alternative to installing more filtration capacity. Temperature can be shown to be a significant factor in filtration performance, mainly because of the reduction in liquid viscosity. Chemical or physical additives can transform a process. Many suppliers have mobile laboratory equipment or their own laboratories that they can use to assess the effect of their products on the filterability of slurries." @default.
