- W3023769516 abstract "The thesis explores place making processes of tourist places in Lashi Hai, a rural area in the northwest Yunnan province of China. As the area is close to one of China’s most important domestic tourism destination, it attracts busloads of day trip visitors. They travel in order to enjoy the wetland area’s natural beauty, horse-riding trips, the local culture and the countless newly established reception centres. The places in Lashi Hai that are visited by tourists have been produced materially in social processes of negotiation between various actors and try to correspond with the visitors’ expectations. These expectations are shaped by diverse touristic imaginaries of the area and its population and distributed by the tourism industry, official media productions as well as social media. Simultaneously, various, at times contradictory, stereotypes exist about these borderland regions, inhabited by ethnic minority populations officially classified as such by the Chinese government.In order to better understand the social construction of these places as well as the involved values and actors, I conceptualise the place as a stage, on which values, norms, and ideas related to culture, ethnicity and identity are constantly negotiated and contested among the actors. Discourses of various scales are embodied by those actors and materialized in their practices. Thus, processes observed on that stage of the local place reflect global, national as well as regional tendencies that are renegotiated by the actors on stage.In each chapter of the thesis I will shed light onto this complex process of place making from a different angle and therefore use diverse theoretical approaches to analyse the social phenomenon in question. The first chapter reveals different layers of meanings and knowledge, which have been created about and laid upon the local place. The thesis uses a historical perspective to describe dominant discourses that are visible until today in the geographies of these places. The second chapter uses a critical approach the heritage discourse and shows on the example of Lashi Hai’s touristic narratives how those are part of a state led nation building project. Furthermore, I analyse how these stories shape the encounter of visitors and residents. In the third chapter, I am led into the spiritual world of Lashi Hai’s residents by my co researchers and discover how their everyday practice had developed a distinct way of coexisting with the rather coercive state versions of local culture. A very intimate and personal perspective on how individual actors on that stage negotiate aspects of ethnicity in their everyday life and include or hide them in their social identity construction is provided in the fourth chapter. The last chapter presents recent trends in tourist place creation in China and shows their link to processes of modernisation, which the local ethnic culture makes part of as well.--Cette these explore les processus de fabrication des lieux touristiques a Lashi Hai, une zone rurale du nord-ouest de la province du Yunnan en Chine. Comme la region est situee a proximite de l'une des destinations touristiques nationales les plus importantes de Chine, cette derniere attire de nombreux touristes journaliers qui apprecient la beaute naturelle des zones humides, les promenades a cheval, ainsi que la culture locale. Les endroits visites par les touristes sont le resultat direct de processus de negociations entre divers acteurs, et ce souvent dans le but de correspondre aux attentes des visiteurs. En effet, le contenu de ces attentes est forme par divers imaginaires touristiques de la region qui sont actuellement perpetres par l’industrie touristique, les medias officiels ainsi que les reseaux sociaux. Dans le meme temps, de multiples stereotypes, parfois contradictoires, subsistent encore sur cette region frontaliere peuplee par des minorites – designees comme telles par gouvernement central chinois.Afin de mieux comprendre la construction sociale de ces lieux ainsi que les types de valeurs et d'acteurs sont impliques, je conceptualise le lieu comme etant une « scene » a travers laquelle des valeurs, des normes et des idees liees a la culture, a l'ethnicite et a l'identite sont constamment negociees et contestees parmi les acteurs. Des discours sont incorpores a differents niveaux par ces acteurs et materialises dans leurs actions. Les processus observes sur cette« scene » refletent en somme des tendances globales, nationales et regionales, renegociees a leur tour par les acteurs presents « sur scene ».Les chapitres dans cette these met en lumiere ce processus complexe du « place making » a chaque fois sous un angle different et a travers une approche theorique permettant d’analyser les enjeux sociaux en question. Le premier chapitre devoile les differentes significations et connaissances qui ont ete cree autour de cette region ; une perspective historique est mise en place afin de decrire les discours dominants qui persistent encore jusqu’a ce jour sur la region. Le deuxieme chapitre adopte une approche critique des discours sur la patrimonialisation en demontrant a travers les narrations touristiques que ces derniers font partie integrante d’un projet etatique visant a promouvoir une certaine identite nationale. Par ailleurs cette section revele egalement les effets de ces discours lors de la rencontre entre les residents et les touristes. Dans le troisieme chapitre, mes co-chercheurs me conduisent dans le monde spirituel des residents de Lashi Hai et on decouvre alors comment leur pratique quotidienne a developpe une maniere distincte de coexister avec des versions officielles, plutot coercitives de la culture locale. Le quatrieme chapitre adopte une perspective tres intime et personnelle sur la maniere dont les acteurs individuels negocient des aspects de l’ethnicite dans leur vie quotidienne et les incluent ou les dissimulent dans leur construction d’identite sociale. Finalement, le dernier chapitre presente les tendances plus recentes en matiere de creation de lieux touristiques en Chine et montre comment celles-ci sont liees aux processus de modernisation qui concernent egalement la culture ethnique locale." @default.
