- W3023911368 abstract ":This chapter discusses the role of metacognitive interventions in improving students’ learning, and particularly problem solving in hypermedia systems. Research supports the use of scaffolds to guide learners in identifying learning needs, evaluating findings and revising search strategies when necessary. Our review of metacognitive scaffolds focuses on print- and computer-based interventions designed to encourage students’ use of planning, monitoring and self-regulating their learning in open-ended learning environments and online databases. We highlight the importance of prompts in scaffolds for facilitating metacognitive behaviors and offer examples of their use in supporting students during online search. Studies point to the importance of considering the individuals’ mental capacities in designing these interventions. Research notes the effectiveness of question prompts in fostering metacognitive activities during ill-structured problem solving." @default.
