- W302495067 abstract "The main processes of interest are photosynthesis, respiration, and carbon assimilate translocation; but aspects of growth, development, and mineral nutrition also be considered when relevant. In a plant community photosynthetic production rises with increasing size of the foliage per ground area. This difference could be attributed to the loss of carbon through photorespiration of the high-compensating plants, but it could also be caused by a real difference in the rate of gross photosynthesis. Several workers have adopted the idea and believe that removal of a metabolic sink induces a building-up of assimilates in the leaves, which in turn cause a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis. An increase of certain fraction can be achieved by applying methods of plant husbandry, and plant breeding. In order to increase the productivity of the crop, it may be desirable to effect a more or less radical change in the morphology and physiology of the plants." @default.
