- W3025133572 abstract "
Objectives
Depression is associated with higher postoperative adverse events. The impact of anxiety is currently unknown. We aimed to investigate preoperative mood symptoms and their correlation with baseline and postoperative parameters.
Methods
Prospective cohort study of women undergoing inpatient surgery at a tertiary care centre, recruited through preadmission clinics (February 2015–June 2019). Women completed preoperative demographic questionnaires, validated depression, anxiety and pain questionnaires. Complications, postoperative pain, length of stay and readmission were extracted from hospital charts. Descriptive statistics and parametric or non-parametric tests were used.
Results
Four hundred sixty-seven women (mean age 60.1) had pre- and postoperative data. 48.4% underwent gynaecologic surgery, followed by cardiovascular, general, colorectal, other (ASA category 1–5). Most women were independent with daily activities (ADL), had good postoperative supports and trusted their surgical team; 88.7% indicated their surgery will most likely be successful and 62.6% were very satisfied with the surgical information received. Baseline median Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) score was 7 (range 0–50.5); median Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) score was 7 (range 0–50.8). Higher anticipation of pain and pain catastrophizing were associated with increased postoperative complications. There were significant positive correlations between baseline BDI, BAI scores and pain perception in the first 24 hours (p<0.001). Mild, moderate and severe depression and anxiety were associated with significantly increased length of stay.
Conclusions
Women have a wide range of preoperative depression and/or anxiety symptoms which can affect postoperative recovery. Future research should focus on mental health optimization in vulnerable women prior to surgery." @default.
