- W3025180112 abstract "Aluminium is a member of the group of passive metals that are always covered with an oxide film that forms as soon as the metal, whether in the liquid or solid state, is in contact with oxygen. There is almost instantaneous formation of a thin oxide film of a few nanometres thick, having the general formula Al2O3,n(H2O). This passivity of aluminium depends on the stability of the oxide film and this is determined directly by the pH of the surrounding environment. However, pH is not the only parameter to be considered to predict the stability of the oxide film (and therefore aluminium) in an aqueous environment. The role of this oxide film is therefore fundamental because it governs the corrosion resistance of aluminium and its alloys. Anything that improves the protective properties of this oxide film improves the corrosion resistance of aluminium and its alloys. The converse is also true. The oxide film formed on aluminium in the solid state at high temperature is made up of two layers: outer amorphous and inner crystalline." @default.
