- W3025621966 abstract "This chapter looks at the place of non-human animals in material religion and, in the process, makes an argument for considering both religion and animals in materialist lens. Attention to animals makes possible a better understanding of religion and of the theoretical and methodological perspectives used to study it. In particular, they underline the value of a materialist approach that conceives of religion as not only texts and faith but also physical acts and bodily presence in the world. Just as attention to non-human animals help us think better about material religion, attention to materiality allows us to think more clearly about animals. A focus purely on texts and ideas leaves even more gaps in efforts to understand animals than in the study of religion. The material turn, with its interest in physical and practical dimensions of experience, makes it possible to understand non-human animals far more adequately than idealist accounts have done." @default.
