- W302605199 abstract "One approach to motivation that is certainly not new or revolutionary is to make learning fun. Games offer the teacher an opportunity to make a class fun, and at the same time a learning situation. Although the Puritan ethic suggests that hard work is incompatible with fun, educational psychology verifies that students are more receptive to learning if it is fun rather than drudgery. The fun is the immediate motivation and the learning takes place as a by-product, often to a greater extent than when teaching is direct. Unconsciously students learn as they consciously play classroom games involving their subject matter. Thinking, recall, and reinforcement result from the use of games in the classroom. The students do not regard game playing as a learning activity but a fun activity; however, learning is taking place. Some of the principles of psychology often are ignored when teachers use games with their students as a learning technique. Probably the oldest form of game used in the classroom is the spelling bee. Traditionally students were lined up and each one given a word to spell in turn. Those who succeeded in spelling the word correctly remained standing, but those who missed their word sat down and were out of the game. The best speller was the last one who remained standing.
