- W3026200501 abstract "Publisher SummaryAn enzyme like monoamine oxidase (MAO) may be indirectly involved in a pathological condition of the central nervous system, even if its biosynthesis is not the prime cause of the condition. At present, the role of MAO in the inactivation of dopamine, noradrenaline, and 5-hydroxytryptamine is better understood. All these amines are known to occur in central aminergic neurons. The intracellular localization of the oxidase is in the outer mitochondrial membrane, and there is little doubt that the biosynthesis of the outer membrane enzymes is under the control of the cell nucleus. There are probably two distinct locations where MAO might be operative. All MAO arises in the area of the cell soma that is involved in protein synthesis. The enzyme that is operative in relation to re-uptake of amine has to travel down the axon, presumably on the mitochondrion." @default.
