- W3027231195 abstract "Many studies on the First World War try to explain why the majority of soldiers persisted in fighting for four years, and many reasons have been given. This article contributes to this question by approaching these motives from the perspective of the emotions and self-consciousness of the Belgian soldiers. Rather than adding to previous explanations, it seeks to illustrate the underlying psychology of these factors. It examines both the perspective of the Army Command and that of the soldier. In what way did the higher ranks try to stimulate the motivation and morale of the soldiers, and how did soldiers react to these endeavours? Showing respect and appreciation were very important in maintaining morale. This does not mean that soldiers consented or did not interpret this in their own way. To carry it through, all ranks within the army were responsible for, and dependent on, one another." @default.
