- W302776095 abstract "It is an abiding concern of educational theory to understand the organization of knowledge and skills relevant to the enterprise of formal schooling. To study this problem systematically in our own time, a number of recent conferences and symposia have examined the question of education as a discipline, the significance of the concept of structure, and the issue of whether or not there is a body of knowl, edge unique to the professsion of education.' It is important to note that participants 'in each of these meetings felt required to speculate about the role of parent academic disciplines in achieving school objectives. And since there are well over a ithousand arts and sciences today-ranging from acarology to zymurgy2-the scope of the problem can be appreciated. In one respect of the foregoing, education is not unique. All specialized areas of inquiry and practice strive to understand and build connections across disciplines. Thus a cluster of supporting sciences rapidly grew up around law, medicine, and engineering as these areas of specialized endeavor achieved professional standing. Newer studies, such as anthropology, have sought to establish relations with both the social sciences and the humanities.3 And in the domain of aesthetics there is the question of the relevance of psychological information to solving the problems of aesthetics.4 In this essay I will discuss some general relations not of psychology to aesthetics but of psychology to aesthetic education, especially in light of improved understanding of the phases of mental growth, the issues at stake in teaching attitude change, the kinds of professional competence needed by teachers, and the complex character of persons' responses to works of art. Accordingly, I will first discuss the kinds of knowledge required by a teacher to perform at a professional level. A brief definition of aesthetic education will then be sketched in order to indicate how" @default.
