- W3029698699 abstract "Assessments of risk for violence, or 'prediction of dangerousness' as it was formerly known, have significant consequences in the criminal justice system and society more widely. This chapter begins with a brief overview of the foundation issues related to violence risk assessment, including terminology, evaluation of accuracy of risk assessment measures, identification of early errors and the importance of base rates in estimating violence risk. It discusses the evolving approaches to violence risk assessment, which has been described as the four generations of risk assessment. Following the review of the progress in violence risk assessment approaches, the chapter describes the two approaches to risk assessment: actuarial assessment and structured professional judgment (SPJ). It discusses the leading actuarial and SPJ tools that have been developed and evaluated for violence risk assessment: the violence risk appraisal guide, revised and the historical clinical risk." @default.
