- W3029745571 abstract "Dreams and fantasies about China have figured in Western discourse since the travels of Marco Polo; until the nineteenth century most were dreams of a better place. European Missionaries arriving in China depicted an empire of splendour and civility. Trade between Europe and China was difficult in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The rulers of the Middle Kingdom considered their empire to be self-sufficient in all produce: they had no need of contact with people from outside its boundaries, who were routinely referred to as ‘barbarians’ or ‘foreign devils’. Portuguese, Dutch, British and American trade was officially tolerated only at Macao and Canton. This chapter explores fictions erected in Britain and India about the opium trade with China, and their effects, telling in its turn the story of an ideology whose eventual victory over mercantile and political opposition has set a continuing moral limitation on capitalism, by proscribing the trade in drugs for personal, pleasurable use." @default.
