- W3030283497 abstract "Objective To study the iodine nutrition status of women at high rate non-iodized salt areas in Guangxi in 2008, and to provide some scientific references for controlling iodine deficiency disorders. Methods According to the result of monitoring iodized salt in 2008, five counties were sampled(Yinhai, Haicheng, Tieshanggang, Hepu and Qinnan). The rate of nun-iodized salt were above 10.00% in those counties. Three townships of each county were chosen except Hepu(chosed 6 townships), and 2 villages of each township were randomly taken as investigation fields. Twenty households aged from 18 to 40 in each village were sampled for questionnaire and iodine contents in edible salt were tested. The concentration of women's urinary iodine from 10 households was determined by As(Ⅲ)-Ce~(4+) catalytic spectrophotometry. Results Seven hundred and twenty-one women were sampled, 721 edible salt and 365 urine samples were tested. The rate of non-iodized salt in 5 counties was 48.96% (353/721). The median of urinary iodine(MUI) was 132.37 μg/L. The proportion below 20 μg/L and 50 μg/L was 4.11%(15/365)and 15.07% (55/365), respectively. The proportion of iodine appropriate level between 100 and 200μg/L was 33.97%(124/365) and 37.53%(137/365) women were iodine deficiency. Two hundred and thirteen urine samples from pregnant and lactating women were tested. The MUI was 123.40 μg/L. The proportion between 150 and 250 μg/L was 21.60% (46/213). The MUI declined with the ascending rate of non-iodized salt(r=-0.96,P < 0.01). Conclusions There is too much non-iodized salt in coastal parts of Guangxi. The iodine nutrition in women is deficient and has not met the criteria of elimination on iodine deficiency disorders. Some positive measures should be taken.Key words: Iodine; Nutrition surveys; Urine; Salts" @default.
