- W3031448849 abstract "Objective To compare and analyze the clinical results of proximal phalanx fractures fixed by mini titanium plate on the dorsal or lateral aspect of the proximal phalanx. Methods Sixty-three proximal phalangeal fractures in 53 cases were reviewed retrospectively. Two groups were identified.Group A included 39 proximal phalangeal fractures in 32 cases and were treated with open reduction and internal fixation by mini titanium plate on the dorsal aspect of the proximal phalanx.Group B included 24 proximal phalangeal fractures in 21cases that were treated with open reduction and internal fixation by mini titanium plate on the lateral aspect of the proximal phalanx.Postoperatively a finger splint was applied.Bone healing time, postoperative complications and finger flexion extension were assessed. The clinical results were evaluated using the total active motion (TAM) criterion of the finger movement. Results All the patients were follow-up for 6 to 24 months, with an average of 11months.According to the TAM evaluation criteria,in group A excellent results were achieved in 9 fingers, good results in 11fingers,fair results in 11fingers and poor results in 8 fingers. The overall satisfactory rate was 51%.In group B the results were excellent in 13 fingers, good in 8 fingers, fair in 2 fingers and poor in 1finger respectively with an overall satisfactory rate of 88%.The difference between the two groups was significant (P <0.05).There were no significant differences between the two groups in bone healing time and infection rate.Fixation stability was less in group B than in group A. Conclusion The modified lateral mini titanium plate fixation for treatment of proximal phalanx fractures can reduce tendon adhesion and ankylosis, therefore leading to better functional recovery. The lateral fixation however is less stable than the dorsal fixation.Key words: Finger pbalanges; Fracture fixation, internal; Follow-up studies" @default.
