However, when supplied in excess, nutrients can become toxic to livestock and/or have negative environmental consequences. Like all plants, forages require 17 chemical elements for growth and development. Macronutrients are required in relatively large quantities; micronutrients or trace elements are required in lower amounts. This chapter reviews the mineral nutrients in forage plants, including nutrient uptake and assimilation processes. It discusses the process of dinitrogen fixation because many forages are leguminous plants that fix their own nitrogen. The chapter also briefly discusses emerging concepts of stored mineral nutrients in forages and nutrient-use efficiency. Reserves accumulated in storage organs (e.g. taproots, stolons, rhizomes, stem bases) are critical to survival, and it has been widely recognized that sugars, starches, fructans, and other nonstructural carbohydrate pools are an importantpart of forage regrowth and plant survival." @default.
