- W303324893 abstract "Combining high tech with traditional service. This caregiver job is very lonely. Support groups aren't always available at times when I can go. Linf2Care is always there! -LinlaCare participant As they face caregiving challenges within their own circle of family and friends, more and more individuals, especially baby boomers and younger age groups, are turning to the Internet for information about health, treatment of diseases, care management, current research findings, and mutual support. A recent Harris Interactive study of 10,000 patients found that 80 percent of those surveyed search the Internet for health-related topics, and about 40 percent of those are seeking health information on behalf of others (Boston Consulting Group, 2002). It should come as no surprise, then, that LinkzCare, an innovative Internet-based program to provide information and support to family caregivers, has been a definite success in the years since its inception in 1999. Family Caregiver Alliance, a research and advocacy group in San Francisco, California, conceived of the idea as they become aware of a combination of factors: increasing use of the Internet (now in 60 percent of U.S. households), availability of more sophisticated information (with use of such vehicles as Medline online searches, for example), a downward trend in the age of first-time callers seeking help from Family Caregiver Alliance (currently, 60 percent are age 64 and under) and more caregivers in the workforce-that lead to examining options for using die Internet to assist families with caregiving. At Family Carcgiver Alliance, we started asking the following questions: How could we harness the enormous communication power of tine Internet to provide easy to use, high quality information? How could we use the Internet to provide quality services to isolated caregivers? And, what might be die internal workplace cultural shifts required to embrace Internet-based service options for caregivers? It was these questions and others that lead us to investigate the world of consumer health informatics and e-health technologies to look for the promising practices and determine how they could be adapted to the area of caregiving and management of chronic care. Fortunately, we found a small but growing body of experience on Internet-based technologies on which to build. LinkzCare went online in 1999. Through the combined efforts of three innovative programsFamily Caregiver Alliance (FCA), which provided its successful service model, information clearinghouse and website; the University of Wisconsin's Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) ; and the California Caregiver Resource Centers' (CRCS) statewide service delivery system-LinkzCare offered a response to the growing information and support needs of caregivers of adults with cognitive impairment. The target population is die often isolated and over-burdened caregivers of dementia patients who find it difficult to take advantage of community- based services because of such reasons as remote locations, full- or parttime employment commitments, long-distance caregiving, or otherwise overwhelming caregiving demands. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, must be identified as the primary or secondary caregivcr for an adult with dementia, must reside in one of die fifty-four counties served by a participating California CRC, and must have completed die CRC intake process. Initial development of LinkzCare was made possible dirougli a grant from The California Endowment. …" @default.
