- W3033605763 abstract "Medical imaging is the technique and process of creating visual representations of the internal hard and soft tissues of the human body for the purposes of diagnosing and treating pathology and trauma. The medical imaging modalities most commonly utilized in biological anthropology research and practice are X-rays, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. This chapter provides a brief overview of the physics behind each of these imaging modalities and details the novel metric and morphological methods that have been developed from images to investigate sexual dimorphism in skeletal remains. The valuable contribution of these imaging modalities provide to the estimation of sex in biological anthropology is discussed and highlighted through case examples from disaster victim identification and biological archaeology contexts are provided. Considerations of the major limitations associated with using medical imaging are also highlighted." @default.
