- W3033783090 abstract "The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is emerging from a long period of conflicts and mismanagement, which has had devastating impacts on the economy, institutions, and the social fabric (World Bank 2013). After 30 years of deteriorating living conditions marked by a steady decline in output per capita. Since 2000, DRC has regained positive per capita growth. The 2000–13 overall performance was driven by robust growth of the mining sector and services and by favorable trends in commodity prices.Over the last decade, DRC’s modest per capita annual growth rate was accompanied are shuffling of the structure of the economy. The purpose of this assessment is threefold. First, analyze poverty and inequality dynamics in the Democratic Republic of Congo with a focus on the spatial and multi-dimensional aspects of poverty. Second, review the main drivers of poverty reduction in DRC by stressing the specific role of labor markets, education, mining activities, agriculture, and migration (rural exodus). Finally, analyze households’ vulnerability to negative shocks (ranging from those arising from public policy decisions toconflict and weather- related shocks) based on consumption patterns. The recent economic growth observed in DRC was associated with moderate povertyreduction.Extreme poverty reduction followed similar patterns as the general poverty incidence. 2005–12, the percentage of population living below the food poverty line fell by 6.8 percentage pointal though there was heterogeneity across regions. DRC’s extreme poverty is still very high if based to international standards. The poverty rate in DRC decreased but due to high population growth, the number of poor increased. Improvement in education attainment for household members has been positive for poverty reduction. Agricultural production and productivity in DRC were hindered by several factors, but environmental shocks were of major concern. This chapter examines the issue of vulnerability of the Congolese households by assessing the effects of idiosyncratic and aggregate shocks on household consumption. It further assesses vulnerability to poverty. Finally, it describes coping strategies available to households at various levels of the risk management process. The chapter is structured as follows: Section 2 presents the adverse shocks facing households; Section 3 presents the impact of shocks on household welfare;while Section 4 assesses vulnerability to poverty; Section 5 investigates coping strategies; finally, section 6 concludes." @default.
