- W3033862062 abstract "The science community has made efforts for over a halfcentury to address sustainable development, which gave birth tosustainability science at the turn of the twenty-first century.Along with the development of sustainability science during thepast two decades, a landscape sustainability science (LSS)perspective has been emerging. As interests in LSS continue to growrapidly, scholars are wondering what LSS is about and how LSS fitsinto sustainability science, while practitioners are asking how LSSactually contributes to sustainability in the real world. To helpaddress these questions, this dissertation research aims to explorethe currently underused problem-driven, diagnostic approach toenhancing landscape sustainability through an empirical example ofurbanization-associated farmland loss (UAFL). Based mainly onmultimethod analysis of bibliographic information, the dissertationexplores conceptual issues such as how sustainability sciencediffers from conventional sustainable development research, and howthe past, present, and future research needs of LSS evolve. It alsoincludes two empirical studies diagnosing the issue of urbanexpansion and the related food security concern in the context ofChina, and proposes a different problem framing for farmlandpreservation such that stakeholders can be more effectivelymobilized. The most important findings are: (1) Sustainabilityscience is not “old wine in a new bottle,” and in particular, isfeatured by its complex human-environment systems perspective andvalue-laden transdisciplinary perspective. (2) LSS has become avibrant emerging field since 2004-2006 with over three-decade’sintellectual accumulation deeply rooted in landscape ecology, yetLSS has to further embrace the two featured perspectives ofsustainability science and to conduct more problem-driven,diagnostic studies of concrete landscape-relevant sustainabilityconcerns. (3) Farmland preservationists’ existing problem framingof UAFL is inappropriate for its invalid causal attribution (i.e.,urban expansion is responsible for farmland loss; farmland loss isresponsible for decreasing grain production; and decreasing grainproduction instead of increasing grain demand is responsible forgrain self-insufficiency); the real problem with UAFL is socialinjustice due to collective action dilemma in preserving farmlandfor regional and global food sufficiency. The present researchprovides broad implications for landscape scientists, thesustainability research community, and UAFLstakeholders." @default.
