- W3033907599 abstract "Abiotic stress restricts the growth and yield of crops, and has become a severe problem for the farmers throughout the globe. Excess amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals are synthesized in plants due to disruption of cells during abiotic stress responses, which causes destructive activities in the plant cells, such as lipid peroxidation, degradation of protein and nucleic acids, and inhibition of enzymes, finally resulting in cell death. Plants have developed various signaling processes that activate biomolecules that are capable of protecting against abiotic stresses. Isoprenoids are the enormous and varied class of naturally synthesized organic volatile compounds derived from terpenes and play significant function in defense mechanism of plants against different abiotic stresses, comprising drought, heat, cold, and oxidizing conditions of the environment. The effect of isoprenoids in stress responses appears to be mediated through alteration of the ROS response by direct reactions of isoprenoids with ROS, indirect modification of ROS signal cascade, and stabilization of lipid membranes, which develop the capability in plants to cope with oxidative stress inside the cells. In this chapter, we have tried to assess the beneficial functions and mechanisms of the isoprenoids that are involved in plant protection against different abiotic stresses." @default.
