- W3033986908 abstract "As integral membrane components of all phyla except archaebacteria, fatty acids are vital for growth and development. Archaebacteria are unique in having membrane lipids based on diphytanyl glycerol diethers and tetraethers rather than fatty acid - linked glycerol moieties found in eubacteria and eukaryotes. A primary strategy used by eubacteria to regulate membrane fluidity is the incorporation of branched chain and/or cyclopropyl moieties. Monounsaturated fatty acids are common in this group, but polyunsaturated fatty acids are rarely found in nonphotosynthetic members of these phyla. The proliferation of organelles in eukaryotes occurred concomitantly with the elaboration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Synthesis of complex systems of endomembranes may be facilitated by bulk or localized areas of enhanced fluidity, necessary for budding and fusion, which can be imparted by increased fatty acid unsaturation. Oxygenated fatty acids are synthesized by all major phyla except archaebacteria using one of three major pathways: cytochromes P450, lipoxygenases, and cyclooxygenases. These oxygenated derivatives often have regulatory rather than structural functions." @default.
