- W3034110835 abstract "This chapter identifies and explains current understanding of biochar effects: where, when, and how positive effects of biochar may be expected in soils and where and when they may not, on the basis of current scientific knowledge of both biochar and soils. This is done first by describing the properties of biochar with a focus on biochar from waste, then by discussing soil fertility, especially in relation to soil organic matter. The chapter examines where the two may or may not match. Biochar is produced by heating biomass under anaerobic conditions (i.e. in the absence of oxygen) in a so-called kiln during pyrolysis. Even if biochar is produced from a single feedstock, its composition and thus its properties may vary widely, depending on the pyrolysis conditions during biochar production. Biochar contains in general three different major fractions: a stable organic fraction, a labile organic fraction, and an ash fraction." @default.
