The vinasse provides nutrients and water to the soil, thereby avoiding the use of synthetic fertilisers, reducing the use of water resources, and increasing the sugarcane productivity. The dosage of vinasse for application in fertigation is usually regulated by means of potassium content, but sometimes the maximum rate of vinasse application to soil is not economically feasible. Therefore, it is necessary to treat these effluents before their use in fertigation to reduce the concentration of contaminants or transported volume of vinasse. This work studied the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) processes (UF-NF) to concentrate vinasse and to recover water for reuse. This study also evaluated the effect of pre-coagulation on the integrated UF-NF system performance, namely the coagulation-UF-NF (C-UF-NF) process. The NF membrane behaviour with (C-UF-NF) and without (UF-NF) pre-coagulation was compared in terms of membrane flux and fouling and treated effluent quality. Furthermore, this study evaluated the potential use of UF and NF concentrates for fertigation and the economic viability of the integrated UF-NF system. The results showed that UF-NF and C-UF-NF processes produced effluents with sufficient quality for sugarcane washing and fertigation. The treated vinasse had a lower K concentration; thus, it is possible to apply a larger volume to the soil with a lower cost. The C-UF-NF process resulted in greater chemical oxygen demand retention, which alleviated the membrane fouling; however, it resulted in a very high treatment cost and payback time, which makes its use unfeasible." @default.
