- W3034366925 abstract "Traditional frost investigations have been performed in wind tunnels and in conditions relevant to heat pump and refrigeration applications. In the traditional frost tunnels, thermo-electric coolers are used to impose temperature conditions in a small metered surface area. Consequently, traditional frost investigations do not replicate 1) the internal heat transfer to the surface and 2) the velocity and water vapor boundary layers which would be present on a large surface such as a wing-fuel tank upper surface. A new facility has been created to investigate frost evolution on large surfaces in humid environments representing aviation cold-soaked fuel frost conditions. The facility, which serves as a climatic chamber, consists of a walk-in freezer with a 7 kW (2 ton) refrigeration system a primary coolant system providing up to 0.25 l/s (4 gpm) of a glycol mixture, a dehumidifier, and multiple ultrasonic humidifiers. To represent the top surface of a wing under cold soaked fuel frost (CSFF) conditions, a tank was constructed of thick aluminum. The top surface of the tank is removable and can be constructed to represent various wing-skin and rib constructions. The wing tank serves as the floor of a wind tunnel inside the climatic chamber. The wind tunnel is used to impose known velocity conditions and cycle air near the surface to avoid water-vapor depletion. Climatic control is demonstrated through time histories of air temperature and relative humidity. Finally, the results of a frost evolution study using an automated photogrammetry system are presented and discussed." @default.
