- W3034641826 abstract "Although the era of modern technology has heralded a novel scene in the human condition, there remains an imperative question to be asked: who are we, to ourselves and to one another? Our technological developments have enabled us to reach unprecedented levels, and yet we still have a fuzzy vision when it comes to defining our relationships. In his play The Vertical Hour (2008; premiered 2006), David Hare endeavours to probe the question of who we are in the contemporary age through illuminating certain moral, philosophical, and political issues as they are manifested in the relationships between the play’s characters. Drawing on theories of International Relationship, this study analyzes David Hare's The Vertical Hour to fathom the quintessential nature of human beings as well as our human passions, relations and connections. Correspondingly, the study aims at detecting the types of interpersonal connectivity presented in the play and how it scrutinizes the human psyche and nature on both personal and interpersonal levels.Hare’s play presents characters that allow him to showcase different facets of interpersonal relationships. It revolves around Nadia, Oliver, and Philip, their entanglements with each as well as with other minor characters. As the play progresses, the characters ponder what makes them who they are: their worth, achievements, or their interpersonal connectivity. The study proposes that Hare, through a dexterously constructed plot, reveals the extent to which empathy and interpersonal relationships are used to define the characters’ personalities as well as their perceptions of themselves and of others.Key words: David Hare, The Vertical Hour, theories of International Relationship, personality , empathy , interpersonal connectivity." @default.
