- W3035991710 abstract "• Describe the attitudes of nurses caring for dying patients.• Identify the need for nurses educated in palliative care concepts. Understanding the attitudes of nursing students toward caring for dying patients and their families is one key element for course content and design in palliative and end-of-life education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate attitudes of undergraduate and graduate nursing students toward caring for dying patients and their families as part of a needs assessment in the creation of palliative care education for nursing students. This was a cross sectional survey. Students from a large nursing college were invited via all-student email lists and newsletters to participate in an anonymous survey. Students consented before entering the survey. A valid and reliable tool, The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) Scale, was used. The FATCOD has 30 items using a 5-point Likert scale to assess attitudes with a total score range of 30 to 150 with a higher score implying a better attitude toward caring for dying patients. Demographic information collected were sex, age, program (BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, DNP, PhD), and religion. Responses without demographics were eliminated. Descriptive statistics were computed as well as one-way ANOVA comparisons with demographics and total attitude scores. A total of 264 students replied including undergraduate (40%) and graduate (60%) students. The largest groups were MSN (50%) and BSN (35%) students. Participants were mainly female (93%) and aged 18-22 (33%), 23-27 (22%), 28-35 (26%) and >35 (19%) years. Overall mean attitude score was 119 (SD=9.61, Range 88-139). Total attitude scores were statistically significant between groups for age, F(3,260)=33.108, p<0.001, program F(4,259)=19.767, p<0.001, and religion F(4,257)=6.324, p<0.001. Overall mean attitude scores have remained consistent with reports in the literature for the past 28 years. Education needs to focus on undergraduate students to make the biggest impact. Patients and families deserve nurses who are comfortable caring for them at the end of life." @default.
