The individual chapters that constitute this interdisciplinary collection are a must-read for all readers concerned about historical genealogy of contemporary conflict and violence in Africa's Great Lakes Region (GLR). The editors have brought together anthropologists, historians, political scientists, and sociologist to explain economic, political, social, and demographic impact and effects of violence that has plagued region. Anyone interested in durable peace in region should read this collection for two reasons. First, it provides short yet detailed analysis of geo-politics of individual countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and Uganda) without losing sight of important regional interconnections between institutions and actors. Second, it brings insights of French-language analysis of seasoned Great Lakes researchers to an Anglophone authence, including three chapters by local academics Alexandre Hatungimana, Marcel Kabanda, and Alphonse Maindo), and those by co-editors (Chretien and Banegas). This is worth noting as much of recent scholarship on GLR has been produced in English, seemingly intended largely for Anglophone authences who developed an interest in region following 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This volume acknowledges this bias in taking time to translate original French-language chapters of all authors (save two, Gerard Prunier and Scott Straus). Fortunately, historicity of volume's core themes- ethnic identity, political violence, and state power- still resonate as loud and clear as they did at time of research and writing in 2000-2004. The Recurring Great Lakes Crisis is essentially a corrective analysis of literatures through which outside analysts and observers (academics, policy-makers, journalists) have sought to understand and explain political events in Region. The Introduction and Conclusion nicely bookend a collection of chapters that balance international and local dynamics across GLR by contrasting key historical events in individual countries with more recent episodes of violence. Co-editor B anegas' s introductory chapter nicely elucidates explanatory prisms that guide author in their chapters, to ensure that chapter sets out both the intertwining of conflicts in Great Lakes region, [while underlining] singular historicity of each (p. 2). The ability of editors to keep all authors mindful of this dual task is commendable, as result is a coherent volume that is organized around salient traditional and novel concepts to better understand and explain intractable political violence that plagues region- ethnicity, conflict, and war, failed states, war economies, regional dynamics of violence, state legitimacy, and civilian strategies to survive conflict and war. …" @default.
